Rossendale Ramblers Embrace Spring with Scenic Hill Walks and Parkland Strolls
The Rossendale Ramblers have been making the most of the improving weather with a series of invigorating group walks across the Lancashire countryside. These community-led excursions offer both exercise and social connection, showcasing some of the region's most picturesque landscapes.
Midweek Ascent of Holcombe Hill in Sunshine
On a recent Wednesday, twenty-one walkers gathered at Helmshore Textile Museum under gloriously sunny skies. The route followed the disused railway line towards Stubbins before exploring the conservation area of Holcombe village. The group then tackled the ascent to the iconic Pilgrims' Cross, continuing upward to Bull Hill where the effort prompted many to shed their outer layers.
The descent took them through the beautiful Alden Valley and Tor End, with participants enjoying superb panoramic views throughout the journey. The combination of challenging terrain and excellent visibility made for a memorable outdoor experience.
Sunday Exploration of Towneley Park and Historic Sites
Eight ramblers enjoyed a six-mile Sunday walk beginning at Walk Mill, following sections of the Burnley Way toward Towneley Golf Course. The route continued to Pike Hill and Cliviger Laithe before returning via Towneley Park and the impressive Towne Hall.
A particularly poignant moment came when the group visited the site of a former music pavilion, where one walker shared that their mother had once played violin there. The landscape was adorned with snowdrops, whose delicate white blooms combined with warmer temperatures to create a much-welcomed sense of approaching spring.
Upcoming February Walks and Social Opportunities
The group has several engaging walks planned for February that combine exercise with social interaction:
- Saturday, February 7th: A sociable two-hour pub walk starting from Weir, ascending to the trig point on Thieveley Pike (weather permitting for extensive views) before returning for extended social time and optional lunch at a licensed café.
- Sunday, February 8th: A six-mile Bury walk incorporating Walmersley Golf Club, the top of Cheesden Valley, and Birtle, concluding around 1:30pm to allow time for family commitments.
- Wednesday, February 11th: A local ten-mile route from Whitaker Park taking in Crawshawbooth, Loveclough and Goodshaw, promising mostly good paths underfoot.
