Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has openly expressed his desire to bring loan star Ibrahim Osman back to the club next season, despite the young winger suffering an injury setback in the midweek victory over Preston North End.
Osman Shines Before Injury Interruption
Ibrahim Osman delivered a standout performance in Birmingham City's 2-1 Championship win against Preston North End on Wednesday evening. The 21-year-old Brighton & Hove Albion loanee provided the assist for Jay Stansfield's opening goal before scoring the second himself, showcasing his growing influence at St Andrew's.
Unfortunately, Osman's impressive display was cut short after just 37 minutes when he sustained a head injury, forcing him to leave the pitch. This raises concerns about his availability for Birmingham's final home game of the season against Bristol City this Saturday.
Davies' Clear Transfer Ambition
When questioned about the possibility of securing Osman's return next season, Davies responded emphatically: "Absolutely. We work closely with Brighton and have good communication, feeding back how they're doing."
The Birmingham manager elaborated on his thinking, stating: "The best place for him is somewhere he's loved and is going to play, get minutes and keep growing. I'd love him to come back but there's a lot of moving parts there so we'll see."
Davies highlighted Osman's Premier League potential, noting: "I've said to a few people I do think he's built for that level. One thing that you need at that level is the speed and the power, especially as a winger if you're going to outplay an opposition defender."
Financial Considerations and Player Development
Brighton & Hove Albion paid £16 million to sign Osman two years ago, and the Ghanaian winger has been widely tipped for a top-level career. While French club Auxerre reportedly had a £13 million option to sign him during his loan spell earlier this season, Birmingham City faces financial constraints due to Championship Profit & Sustainability rules.
This makes another loan arrangement appear more financially viable than a permanent transfer for the Championship club. Davies emphasized Osman's work ethic alongside his technical abilities, saying: "His goals come from pressing, working hard, and going up to win a header and taking a knock is all working for the team. That's what I love most about him."
Injury Concerns and Future Uncertainty
With concussion protocols likely to sideline Osman for the weekend fixture against Bristol City, there's a possibility the Preston match represented his final appearance in front of Birmingham City supporters this season. Davies acknowledged this uncertainty, stating: "My understanding is that he would be OK for the final game. For this weekend, I would presume not."
Since joining Birmingham City on loan in January, Osman has contributed four goals and assists across 16 Championship appearances, establishing himself as a key attacking threat for Davies' side.
