Undefeated welterweight and qualified solicitor Oscar McCracken has revealed the origin of his unique boxing nickname, 'De La Lawyer', which emerged from a frantic argument in the Cayman Islands. The 27-year-old Birmingham fighter, son of former boxer Spencer McCracken, is the latest member of the city's renowned McCracken boxing clan.
How the Nickname Was Born
Named after legendary boxer Oscar De La Hoya, McCracken earned his moniker in unlikely circumstances. While assisting his father in the corner of Commonwealth champion Matt Windle during a title defense in the Cayman Islands, a dispute broke out between the McCracken camp and a rival promoter. A verbal sparring match ensued, and Oscar helped secure a legal knockout by resolving the issue.
Speaking about the nickname, McCracken said: 'When I decided to turn pro, everyone was throwing in names. My dad had a boxer in the Cayman Islands defending his Commonwealth title, and I was lucky enough to go over there and help out. While I was there, there was a bit of a commotion and a potential legal issue. I saw my dad coming over with a piece of paper and thought, "Oh no, don't ask me to look at this, I've only just got here!" After a frantic argument and certain cross words, a resolution was reached. It was a bit heated at times, but we managed to sort it out. My dad just came out with it and said, "I told you De La Lawyer would sort it," and everyone burst out laughing. Among the commotion, we finally found a nickname. Everyone loved it, and it's just stuck from there.'
