Karen Boath, from SNAP Charity, and Nimo Saeed, from Tri Sport Essex, joined Jo Bailey on Drive last week to discuss the return of the Try-A-Tri event at the Brentwood Centre and the positive impact it continues to have on local families.
Event Growth and Recognition
Now in its fourth year, Try-A-Tri has evolved into something far greater than a simple swim, bike, and run challenge. Last year, British Triathlon recognized it as the largest swim-bike-run participation event in the country. Additionally, it recently received a commendation at the Brentwood Sports Awards. Nimo Saeed also had a successful evening, winning the Brentwood Sports Personality award.
Accessible for All
Scheduled for June 28, the event is designed to be as inclusive as possible. Adults can participate in a short triathlon or duathlon, while younger attendees have dedicated children's events. Under-14s can join free of charge, and those without a bike can hire one through the organizers. As Nimo explained, the focus is on participation rather than competition. Some participants come with sporting experience, while others are simply trying something new. Over the years, many have overcome nerves, learned new skills, and gained confidence through taking part.
Supporting SNAP Charity
For SNAP, the event provides crucial fundraising support. Karen reminded listeners that the charity supports families across Essex, Thurrock, and Southend who have children with additional needs or disabilities. Importantly, families do not need a diagnosis or referral to access help. Running SNAP costs around £1 million per year, and events like Try-A-Tri help fund services such as support groups, holiday activities, and advice for families facing challenges.
Community Celebration
Alongside the sporting activities, there will be food stalls, entertainment, family activities, and plenty of encouragement from the sidelines, making it as much a community event as a sporting one. More information about Try-A-Tri and SNAP's other fundraising events can be found at snapcharity.org and trisportessex.org. As always, you can hear the interview again at phoenixfm.com.
