A cutting-edge 3G football pitch has been officially inaugurated in New Romney, marking a significant enhancement to local sports infrastructure. The ceremony was presided over by New Romney Mayor, John Rivers, celebrating the culmination of a collaborative funding effort spearheaded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government’s Football Foundation.
Substantial Investment and Construction Timeline
The project was made possible through a substantial £932,000 grant awarded by the Football Foundation, with construction commencing in July 2025. This modern facility features a fully floodlit, all-weather, artificial grass surface, designed to provide reliable training and match conditions throughout the year, regardless of weather disruptions.
Integration with The Marsh Academy and Community Access
Strategically located at The Marsh Academy, the new pitch complements the school's existing community amenities. During school hours, it will serve students, particularly those in the Football Academy, who showcased their skills at the opening event. Outside of school time, the facility will be utilised by Partner Clubs: New Romney Youth FC, Lydd Town Youth FC, and Hythe Town Youth FC during evenings and weekends.
Furthermore, the pitch is available for bookings by the broader football community via The Marsh Academy's website, promoting inclusive access and fostering local sporting engagement.
Additional Funding and Collaborative Support
Beyond the Football Foundation grant, the project benefited from an extra £223,200 in contributions from various stakeholders. These included The Marsh Academy, The Rural England Prosperity Fund, The Roger DeHaan Charitable Trust, New Romney Town Council, Folkestone & Hythe Council Ward Grants, and financial support from each of the partner clubs.
Leadership Perspectives on Community Impact
Shaun Simmons, Principal of The Marsh Academy, expressed enthusiasm about the development, stating: "We are delighted to open our new 3G pitch, which will significantly enhance sports provision at The Marsh Academy and offer a valuable facility for the wider community. This marks an exciting milestone for us, and we extend our sincere thanks to the Football Foundation and other funders whose support has made this possible. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this development will have on our community for years to come."
Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, highlighted the broader significance of such initiatives: "The Football Foundation is working closely with our partners – the Premier League, The FA and Government – to transform the quality of grassroots facilities in England by delivering projects like this across the country. Good quality playing facilities have a transformative impact on physical and mental health and play an important role in bringing people together and strengthening local communities. We’re delighted that the local community on The Romney Marsh will now be able to enjoy all these benefits thanks to the new facilities at The Marsh Academy."
This new 3G pitch represents a pivotal investment in grassroots football, promising to bolster community cohesion, health, and sporting opportunities in the New Romney area for the foreseeable future.
