This global event, celebrating its 40th anniversary, will take place over the weekend of March 20-22, with proceeds benefiting Cancer Research UK, the end-of-life charity Marie Curie, and the Swimathon Foundation.
Swimming Distances and Team Challenges
Individual participants can select from a range of distances, including 500 meters, 1.5 kilometers, 2.5 kilometers, the Swimathon 5k, and the Triple 5k. Teams have the option to tackle the 1.5k, 2.5k, or 5k challenges, making the event accessible to swimmers of all abilities and ages.
GLL's Significant Support and Past Success
GLL, the largest provider of public swimming in the United Kingdom, has been a steadfast supporter of Swimathon through its 'Better' branded pools. In the previous year, 1,054 challenges were completed across 68 pools nationwide, raising an impressive £109,000 for charitable causes.
With 140 pools and nine lidos under its management, GLL also stands as the biggest provider of swimming lessons in the UK, instructing approximately 200,000 individuals weekly, including adult swimmers. So far this year, over 1,200 people have registered to participate, indicating that Swimathon 2026 could become the largest challenge of its kind in GLL facilities.
Charitable Impact and Community Engagement
Matt Simmons, GLL Transformation Manager in Cardiff, emphasized the importance of the event, stating, "The world’s largest charitable funder of cancer research, Cancer Research UK, and the UK’s leading end-of-life charity, Marie Curie, as well as Swimathon Foundation, will directly benefit from our fundraisers' efforts. A big thank you to everyone taking part and raising money for such good causes."
