Water enthusiasts across Cambridgeshire are encouraged to make a splash for Swimathon 2026, as this iconic event celebrates its remarkable 40th anniversary. The sponsored swim, recognized as the world's largest annual pool-based fundraising initiative, will take place at nearly 500 venues throughout the region and across the nation from March 20 to 22.
Local Pools Ready to Host Swimmers
Numerous pools in Cambridgeshire are set to participate, providing ample opportunities for community involvement. Key venues include One Leisure St. Ives Indoor in St. Ives, One Leisure St Neots in St. Neots, Jesus Green Lido in Cambridge, Parkside Pools and Gym in Cambridge, Saxon Pool and Leisure Centre in Biggleswade, Royston Leisure Center in Royston, Manor Leisure Centre in Whittlesey, George Campbell Leisure Centre in March, and Oundle School Sports Centre in Peterborough.
A Legacy of Impact and Community Support
Since its inception in 1986, Swimathon has seen over 750,000 participants in the UK, collectively raising more than £55 million for charitable causes. This year, organizers are calling on swimmers of all ages and skill levels to join in celebrating the event's 40th anniversary, with proceeds benefiting Cancer Research UK, the end-of-life charity Marie Curie, and the Swimathon Foundation.
Olympic gold medalist and Swimathon president, Duncan Goodhew MBE, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "It's incredible to think that, for forty years, Swimathon has brought people together to enjoy the benefits of swimming and raise extraordinary sums for charity. Its success is testament to the loyal participants who return year after year, and to the new generation of swimmers now taking up the baton." He added, "To everyone in Cambridgeshire who has been part of our journey: thank you. And to those joining us for this milestone anniversary: good luck! I can't wait to see what the next 40 years have in store."
Flexible Participation Options for All
Swimathon offers a variety of challenges to accommodate different preferences and abilities. Individuals can choose distances ranging from 500 meters up to a supercharged Triple 5k, while teams of two to five people can participate in relays of 1.5k, 2.5k, or 5k. For those unable to attend organized sessions, the MySwimathon option allows participants to select a distance, time, and venue that suits them, with completion available between March 1 and 31.
Celebrity and Athlete Support Amplifies the Cause
The event has garnered widespread support from a host of famous faces, rallying people to sign up. Celebrity backers include Ayo Akinwolere, Dr Ranj, Dermot O'Leary, Tim Lovejoy, and Kate Thornton, alongside athletes such as Alice Dearing, Michael Gunning, Giles Long, Nell McAndrew, Cassandra Patten, Lauren Steadman, and BBC's Emily Steel, also known as Dynamite. What began four decades ago as an initiative to boost swimming participation at local authority pools has evolved into a beloved force for good, earning extensive community and celebrity endorsement.
Charity Partners Highlight the Importance of Fundraising
Patrick Keely, a spokesperson for Cancer Research UK in Cambridgeshire, emphasized the critical role of events like Swimathon, noting, "With new technologies opening doors to new discoveries, we're living in a golden age of cancer research. But in the East of England, around 38,200 people are diagnosed with the disease every year, so we must go further and faster. Fundraising events like Swimathon are vital to fuel more progress. Every length swum will help bring us closer to a world where everybody lives longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer." He urged, "That's why we're urging first-timers and seasoned swimmers alike to take the plunge and be part of Swimathon's extraordinary legacy. Together we can power the next wave of cancer breakthroughs."
Hannah Grant, national events manager at Marie Curie, added, "This March, people can dive into a fun, new challenge and raise money for a great cause. There's only one chance to give someone the best possible end of life. That's why we're urging swimmers of all abilities to head down to their local pool to raise money and help Marie Curie bring expert end of life care to more people, whatever their illness."
