PE teacher Stewart Biggie has dramatically expanded tennis provision at Chase High School in Westcliff, now offering daily tennis clubs and integrating the sport into the curriculum for both boys and girls. Ten students will also attend Wimbledon this summer as a reward for their commitment.
Background and Motivation
Mr Biggie, a former tennis coach who still competes in local leagues, brought his passion for the sport to the school. He said: "Tennis provision has grown significantly over the last few years. The main driving force behind the change has been my passion for tennis." He emphasized the benefits of tennis beyond fitness, including confidence, resilience, and sportsmanship.
Expanding Access and Breaking Stereotypes
The school now offers tennis clubs every day, giving students regular opportunities to play and compete. Mr Biggie noted that not all students enjoy traditional team sports like football or rugby, so tennis provides an alternative. He also aimed to challenge the stereotype that tennis is exclusive: "Tennis can be accessible to everyone, and there are many affordable opportunities to get involved locally."
Competitive Success
Despite many students having no prior club experience, they have competed against schools with established tennis programmes. Mr Biggie said: "For many of our competitors, the school matches were their first experience of playing on a competitive tennis court, yet they have consistently demonstrated excellent attitudes, resilience and sportsmanship throughout." He stressed that competitive opportunities should not be limited to experienced players.
Wimbledon Trip
Ten students from various year groups will attend Wimbledon this summer as a reward for their dedication. Mr Biggie explained: "This is a fantastic opportunity to reward students for their commitment to sport. The group includes students who have consistently demonstrated enthusiasm, commitment and a positive attitude towards sport."
