Twycross Zoo is opening up its spectacular winter light trail to more families by introducing special discounted evenings for people receiving benefits.
Affordable Access to a Magical World
The zoo's Lanterns of the Wild event has been a major hit since it launched, offering an immersive after-dark experience. To ensure it is accessible to all, the attraction has announced two Universal Credit Evenings where tickets will cost just £8 per person.
These special nights are scheduled for Thursday 22 January 2026 and Thursday 29 January 2026. The offer is open to those in receipt of a range of eligible benefits, including Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, and Income Support.
What to Expect on the Trail
Running until 22 February 2026, the trail showcases over 2,000 hand-crafted lanterns across ten different illuminated habitats. Visitors can wander from lush rainforests to icy tundras and vibrant ocean scenes.
Highlights include life-size Emperor penguins, a towering octopus, a walk-through igloo, and a 25-metre Mount Rushmore installation. A major draw is the world-first The Gruffalo lanterns experience, bringing the beloved children's character to life in light.
How to Book Your Discounted Tickets
Tickets for the Universal Credit Evenings are strictly limited and must be purchased online in advance via the zoo's website. Bookings are capped at six tickets per transaction.
On the night, guests will need to show proof of eligibility, such as a screenshot from their Universal Credit journal or an official benefits letter. One proof per household is sufficient, and photographic ID may also be requested. It is important to note that this ticket does not include daytime entry to the zoo itself.
Jamie Turner, Marketing Director at Twycross Zoo, said: "Lanterns of the Wild is a truly magical experience, and we’re thrilled to open it up to even more families and visitors with our Universal Credit Evenings. It’s a chance for everyone to enjoy a breathtaking after-dark adventure and make unforgettable memories together."
With infants under two going free (though still requiring a ticket), this initiative provides a vital opportunity for families on a tight budget to enjoy a high-quality, enchanting seasonal event.
