Major Milestone Reached in Airport Transformation
Bournemouth Airport has officially opened the doors to its brand-new arrivals and immigration hall, marking a pivotal moment in a comprehensive multi-million pound overhaul. This significant development is a core component of the first phase of a sustained investment programme designed to future-proof this key South West transport hub.
Inside the Multi-Million Pound Enhancements
The newly unveiled facility represents a monumental leap in capacity and comfort. The floor space has been tripled compared to the previous arrivals area, dramatically reducing congestion. Crucially, the number of Border Force passport control desks has doubled, which is set to slash waiting times for passengers.
This new hall is part of a £17 million package of works being delivered at the airport this year alone. Other key projects that have already been completed include a doubling of the check-in desk capacity and a significant upgrade to the outbound baggage system.
Further enhancing the passenger journey, an expanded baggage reclaim hall featuring new, larger carousels is on track for completion before the end of 2025.
A Tangible Difference for Passengers and the Region
Steve Gill, Managing Director of Bournemouth Airport, stated that the new arrivals hall is a clear signal of the airport's ongoing transformation. He emphasised the commitment to creating a more efficient, welcoming, and sustainable airport, noting that these improvements are already making a tangible difference for passengers, airlines, and staff.
The current works are just the beginning. Future plans include an extended terminal building and a new transport interchange with improved access for buses, taxis, cyclists, and pedestrians.
The airport's growth is undeniable. It now serves 48 destinations and was used by a record 1.1 million passengers in the year to March. As one of Dorset's largest employment areas, the airport directly employs around 450 staff at peak season, with a further 230 direct jobs forecast to be created through its ongoing investment programme.
