EV Chargers Not Keeping Up Ahead of 2030 Ban

The UK's electric vehicle charging network is failing to keep pace with the rapid growth in electric car ownership, according to a new report. The number of ultra low emission vehicles on British roads surged by 33 per cent year-on-year, reaching 2.84 million by the end of 2025. However, public charging infrastructure grew by just 22.8 per cent over the same period, meaning the average number of electric vehicles sharing each public charger increased from 30.6 to 33.1.

ZEV Mandate Accelerates EV Adoption

The data shows that while the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate and other Labour Party government policies are accelerating EV adoption, infrastructure investment is struggling to keep pace. The 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel cars is driving a surge in electric vehicle sales, but the charging network is not keeping up with the pace of change.

Blended Approach to Car Buying

Rob Taylor, Head of E-Commerce & Direct Sales at Volkswagen Financial Services UK, commented on the evolving car buying landscape. He noted that while online tools are valued, buyers still want personal interaction with experts. "This evolution towards a blended approach underlines the power of combining fast, accessible online information with trusted, expert guidance," Taylor said.

Recent research revealed that more than half (51%) of buyers favour a blended approach when searching for their next car, using digital tools to compare models and prices before turning to dealership experts for reassurance prior to purchase.

Human Element Remains Critical

Taylor added: "With buyers seeking clarity, validation and confidence, removing the human element from the car buying journey risks alienating customers at a critical point in their decision-making process." He emphasised that Volkswagen Financial Services is continually evolving its approach to meet changing customer expectations, enhancing its digital ecosystem, simplifying processes, and introducing new tools to make the car buying process as easy, simple and transparent as possible.
