Ecojet Airlines Enters Liquidation Before Electric Flights Take Off

Scottish airline Ecojet Airlines has collapsed into voluntary liquidation following an unsuccessful attempt to raise £20 million in funding. The company, which was promoted as the world's first all-electric airline, will not proceed with its planned operations.

Ambitious Green Aviation Plans Grounded

Founded in 2023 by businessman Dale Vince, a prominent Labour donor and owner of Forest Green Rovers football club, Ecojet Airlines had set out to revolutionize air travel. The airline aimed to operate entirely with electric aircraft, targeting long-haul flights and European routes. An initial service between Edinburgh and Southampton was in the planning stages.

At the launch, Mr Vince expressed strong optimism, stating, "This is a vital frontier in the move to net zero, green living, whatever you choose to call it - and it's absolutely doable. It's a matter of when, not if." The company's vision involved retrofitting conventional planes with hydrogen-electric powertrains to achieve a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions, with water as the only byproduct.

Liquidation Proceedings Initiated

According to documents from late January, a petition was brought to Edinburgh Sheriff Court for the business to be wound up. Joint interim liquidators were appointed to oversee the process. Paul Dounis and Mark Harper of Opus Restructuring were named as provisional liquidators.

Opus Restructuring confirmed that the liquidation was voluntary and initiated by the company's board. They noted that Ecojet was a start-up with no material assets. The members have elected to fund the liquidation to ensure employees receive their full statutory entitlements.

Environmental Impact and Future Prospects

Ecojet's approach focused on repurposing existing aircraft rather than building new models, which was projected to save 90,000 tonnes of carbon annually. The airline's collapse highlights the challenges facing green aviation initiatives, particularly in securing necessary investment for innovative technologies.

Despite this setback, the concept of electric flights remains a topic of interest in the aviation industry, as companies worldwide continue to explore sustainable alternatives to traditional fossil fuel-powered aircraft.
