Europe's Jet Fuel Crisis: 6 Weeks Left, UK Holidays at Risk

Europe is grappling with a severe jet fuel shortage, with supplies estimated to last only six more weeks due to the ongoing Iran war. An energy chief has issued a stark warning that flight cancellations are imminent if oil supplies are not restored in the coming weeks, putting UK tourists' holidays in jeopardy.

Imminent Flight Disruptions Warned

Fatih Birol, the executive director of the International Energy Agency, told the Associated Press that Europe has "maybe six weeks or so" of jet fuel remaining. He cautioned that travellers should brace for cancellations soon, stating, "I can tell you soon we will hear the news that some of the flights from city A to city B might be cancelled as a result of lack of jet fuel." Birol described the situation as a "dire strait," echoing the band name Dire Straits, and warned it could have major implications for the global economy, worsening economic growth and inflation worldwide.

Birmingham Airport Already Affected

The crisis is already impacting local travel, with Birmingham Airport experiencing flight delays and cancellations on Thursday, April 16. Lufthansa and Eurowings flights were among those affected, partly due to an ongoing pay dispute in the European Union. Additionally, the Middle East crisis continues to disrupt airlines, with carriers like Etihad, Emirates, and Fly Dubai forced to ground fleets after the US attacked Iran and Israel supported it.

Broader Economic and Travel Impacts

Birol highlighted that the jet fuel shortage will lead to higher petrol prices, higher gas prices, and high electricity prices, with some regions hit worse than others. The European Union is responding by drafting plans to tackle the looming supply crunch and maximise refinery output. From next month, the European Commission will introduce EU-wide mapping of refining capacity for oil products and implement measures to ensure existing refining capacity is fully utilised and maintained, according to a draft proposal seen by Reuters.

This developing situation underscores the fragility of global energy supplies and the direct impact on travel and tourism, with UK holidaymakers urged to stay informed as the crisis unfolds.
