Six arrested after Villa Park disorder

West Midlands Police have made a series of arrests following violent scenes that marred the Europa League match between Aston Villa and BSC Young Boys at Villa Park.

Match Night Violence Leads to Initial Arrests

During the fixture on Thursday, November 27, a section of away supporters from the Swiss club, BSC Young Boys, caused significant disorder. The trouble erupted in the first half of the match, which Aston Villa went on to win 2-1.

Fans were seen throwing various items onto the pitch, including broken seats and coins, which were aimed at both Aston Villa players and police officers. The violence resulted in a player being injured.

Dutch forward Donyell Malen, 26, suffered a cut to his head after being struck by an object while celebrating his goal. Two men were arrested on the night itself on suspicion of affray and assaulting a police officer.

Further Arrests at Birmingham Airport

In a significant development on Friday afternoon, a further six men were arrested at Birmingham Airport. The individuals, all believed to be supporters of BSC Young Boys, were detained by police as they attempted to leave the country.

All six were arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and violent disorder. The two men arrested during the match also remain in police custody.

Police Condemn Unacceptable Behaviour

West Midlands Police have issued a strong statement condemning the actions of those involved. A force spokesperson emphasised that violent behaviour will not be tolerated at football matches.

The spokesperson stated: "If you commit any act of violence, you will be arrested. Officers were assaulted during the disorder, and we are committed to holding all responsible individuals to account." The investigation into the full extent of the disorder is ongoing.
