UK holidaymakers planning trips to popular Spanish destinations such as Majorca, Menorca, Tenerife, and Lanzarote are set to encounter a new financial hurdle. By the conclusion of 2026, a revised ETIAS travel authorisation requirement will be implemented, imposing a fee of €20 per person—nearly triple the initially proposed cost of seven euros.
ETIAS: A New Entry Mandate for European Travel
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is designed for visa-exempt nationals journeying to 30 European nations. This authorisation remains valid for up to three years or until the passport's expiration, whichever occurs first. Should a traveler obtain a new passport, a fresh ETIAS authorisation becomes necessary.
With a valid ETIAS, individuals can enter the territories of participating countries repeatedly for short-term stays, typically up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The system aims to enhance security and streamline border controls across Europe.
Countries Requiring ETIAS Authorisation
The ETIAS requirement will apply to travel to the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. Additionally, Cyprus will necessitate ETIAS once it joins the Schengen area.

A second traveler expressed doubt, stating, "I’ll believe the new system when I actually see it working after the 7/8 years of delay with the new and shambolic EES which is being gradually abandoned as every day goes by.
