Jaguar Land Rover Issues Urgent Safety Recall for 16,000 I-PACE Electric Vehicles

Jaguar Land Rover has issued an urgent safety recall affecting approximately 16,000 drivers of its I-PACE electric vehicles. The recall addresses a potential thermal overload condition that could lead to fire or smoke, posing significant safety risks.

Immediate Safety Instructions for Affected Owners

Owners of affected vehicles are being instructed to avoid parking near buildings or inside garages until necessary repairs are completed. Additionally, the company recommends charging vehicles outdoors to minimize potential hazards.

The recall specifically targets Jaguar I-PACE models equipped with traction battery packs manufactured up to the end of the 2021 model year. Jaguar Land Rover is voluntarily conducting this recall to address what they describe as "an elevated safety risk."

What Owners Need to Do

Affected vehicle owners will be contacted directly by Jaguar Land Rover and asked to visit an authorized JLR repairer. The repair process involves:

  • A comprehensive inspection of the vehicle's battery system
  • A cost-free software update to mitigate the thermal overload risk
  • Interim safety measures until permanent repairs can be completed

Jaguar Land Rover emphasized in their customer communication: "A vehicle thermal overload condition, such as fire or smoke, can result in increased risk of occupant injury and/or injury to persons outside the vehicle, as well as property damage."

Expert Concerns and Real-World Implications

Fire safety engineer Kim Armstrong expressed serious concerns about the vehicles, stating he won't allow his grandchildren to ride in his I-PACE due to safety worries. "I'm driving around in a vehicle that is at risk of fire, danger to me, danger to others, and with possible structural defects," Armstrong explained.

He added: "Because of my job, I understand the balance of risk. I don't put my grandchildren in the car. I'm sceptical about charging it at work, because it's an underground car park."

How to Check If Your Vehicle Is Affected

Owners can check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to determine if their I-PACE is included in the recall. The VIN can typically be found:

  1. On a plate visible through the windshield, usually at the base on the left-hand side
  2. On the certification label in the driver door opening

If owners cannot locate their VIN using these methods, they should contact their local Jaguar retailer for assistance. The Birmingham-based car manufacturer is working to ensure all affected vehicles receive the necessary safety updates promptly.
