Omoda E5 EV Refresh Enhances Range and Driving Dynamics
In a swift update less than a year after its initial launch, the Omoda E5 electric SUV has undergone a significant refresh, aiming to address earlier criticisms and improve its market position. This compact SUV from the Chinese brand Omoda now offers hybrid, petrol, and a new EV version, with the latter driven here in two trims: the entry-level Knight and the better-equipped Noble.
Improved Battery and Range Performance
The Omoda E5 is now powered by a 61kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which enhances safety, durability, and value. This battery type is known for its longevity and stability compared to older alternatives. In practical terms, it boosts the official WLTP driving range to 267 miles on a full charge, a handy improvement over the previous model that reduces range anxiety for longer journeys.
When charging is needed, the car supports DC rapid charging at up to 130kW. This capability allows for a quick stop at motorway services, taking the battery from 20 to 80 percent in around half an hour, provided an available charging point can be found.
Design and Interior Upgrades
The styling of the Omoda E5 remains smart, with a front end that eliminates the traditional grille, giving it a distinctive EV look that draws attention when parked. Inside, the vehicle feels quite upmarket for its price point of around £33,000. Key features include a pair of 12.25-inch curved displays: one for infotainment, connectivity, and navigation, and the other for a real-time driving display.
The cabin is adorned with high-end materials, creating a light and airy atmosphere. However, the gear selector has been relocated to a stalk behind a newly designed steering wheel, a position that may not be to everyone's liking, as it sits where the wiper control would normally be.
Performance and Handling Enhancements
Powering the front wheels is an electric motor that delivers 150kW (approximately 201bhp) and 340Nm of torque. This setup provides effortless acceleration, making the SUV feel refined and quiet in urban environments. Changes to the suspension have significantly improved handling and driving dynamics.
On open twisting roads, the Omoda E5 copes admirably at higher speeds, offering agility and stability. The steering also provides good driver feedback, enhancing the overall driving experience. During a test drive through Buckinghamshire, which included city streets, dual carriageways, and varied terrain, the car left a solid impression, despite challenges from HS2 construction and roadworks.
Safety and Market Value
On the safety front, the Omoda E5 comes comprehensively equipped, boasting a five-star Euro NCAP rating. It includes a full suite of advanced driver assistance systems, such as autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera, ensuring excellent all-round protection and confidence for drivers.
The Omoda E5 continues to emphasize value, positioning itself as one of the more affordable electric SUVs in its class in the UK, with prices starting from £33,065. It competes directly with models like the BYD Atto 3 and MG ZS EV. This competitive pricing is supported by a reassuring warranty package, including a seven-year vehicle warranty and separate cover for the battery.
Overall, with a longer range, an improved battery, and retuned suspension that delivers a more engaging drive, the refreshed Omoda E5 presents an enhanced package for electric vehicle enthusiasts.
