West Midlands Metro has issued an urgent safety warning to passengers who risk injury by rushing through closing tram doors.
The transport network is launching a new awareness campaign focused on tram door etiquette as it prepares for the opening of the Birmingham Eastside Extension.
New Safety Campaign Targets Dangerous Behaviour
The initiative introduces a series of short, informative videos that highlight what officials describe as 'common mistakes' that put passengers at risk.
These include rushing through closing doors, attempting to force doors open, and blocking exits during busy periods.
Don Walters, Metro's Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) Manager, explained: "The vast majority of customers behave responsibly when getting on or off the tram, but we sometimes see people putting themselves and others at risk, particularly when they are in a hurry."
Proper Tram Etiquette Explained
The campaign emphasises several key safety practices that passengers should follow:
- Wait for others to exit the tram before boarding
- Stand clear of doors to allow swift and safe disembarkation
- Keep bags, straps, walking sticks and other items away from closing doors
"A little patience and respect for others go a long way in making tram travel safer and more enjoyable for everyone," added Mr Walters.
Campaign Rollout Ahead of Major Extension
The safety push comes at a crucial time for the network, which is preparing for the opening of the Birmingham Eastside extension.
The educational videos will soon be available on the Metro website and will be widely shared across the organisation's social media channels in the coming weeks.
This comprehensive approach aims to reach as many passengers as possible with the important safety message before the network expands its services.
