Motorists across the United Kingdom are confronting a significant and unwelcome surge in fuel costs just as the festive travel season begins. New figures reveal that the average prices of both petrol and diesel experienced their most rapid monthly increase since April 2024 during November, placing additional financial pressure on households.
Sharp Increases at the Pump
The data shows a clear and costly upward trend for drivers. The average price of unleaded petrol rose by 2.17p per litre in November, pushing the typical cost to 137.17p. This represents the highest price seen at forecourts since mid-March of this year.
Drivers of diesel vehicles faced an even steeper climb. The average price of diesel increased by a substantial 3.84p per litre, reaching 146.57p. This is a price level not witnessed by motorists since late August 2024.
The Impact on Family Finances
These wholesale price hikes translate directly into heavier burdens at the filling station. For a typical 55-litre family petrol car, a full tank now costs approximately £75.44. This is an increase of £1.19 since the end of October.
The picture is more severe for diesel car owners. Refilling the same size tank now averages £80.61, marking a monthly jump of £2.11.
A 'Costly Christmas' Warning from the RAC
The timing of the increases has drawn criticism from motoring organisations. Simon Williams, the RAC's head of policy, expressed disappointment that prices are climbing so sharply in the run-up to Christmas. He highlighted that this is a period when countless drivers embark on journeys spanning hundreds of miles to visit loved ones, making the price rise particularly painful for family budgets.
"This unwelcome change at the pumps makes for a costly Christmas for many," Williams stated, underscoring the added strain during a traditionally expensive time of year.
How Drivers Can Mitigate the Cost
In light of the rising prices, the RAC emphasises that every penny saved on fuel counts. A saving of just 1p per litre equates to roughly 55p off a full tank for an average car.
The organisation advises that the most effective method for locating the best value fuel is to use a dedicated fuel finder tool. Apps like the myRAC app feature such technology, allowing drivers to compare local prices and seek out the cheapest available fuel before they travel, a small step that can lead to significant savings over the festive period.
