Drivers in the West Midlands have been caught off guard by speeding fines issued for traveling under 70mph on motorways. While the national speed limit is 70mph, temporary reductions are common on smart motorways like the M6, and ignoring them can lead to penalties.
Why Drivers Are Being Fined
Temporary speed limits are often displayed on overhead gantries during heavy traffic, accidents, or roadworks, showing speeds like 60, 50, or 40mph. Some motorists mistakenly believe these are advisory, but they are legally enforceable, and speed cameras are active.
Common Locations for Fines
In the West Midlands, the M6 between junctions 7 and 8 near Great Barr and between the M54 exit slip road near Wolverhampton and junction 10 for Walsall are hotspots. Thousands have been fined here during variable speed limits.
Additionally, roadworks on the M42 at Water Orton, related to HS2 viaduct construction, have led to 50mph restrictions. BirminghamLive understands fines have been issued, though West Midlands Police did not confirm this in a freedom of information response.
Motorists are urged to obey all displayed speed limits to avoid fines and ensure safety.
