Crooked airline worker convicted in £30m smuggling racket

A criminal gang smuggled nearly £30 million in cash out of the United Kingdom on flights from Birmingham, Manchester, and Brussels, with the assistance of a corrupt airline employee, authorities have revealed. The operation ran from December 2017 to November 2019, with money mules transporting large sums of cash hidden in luggage to the United Arab Emirates.

Role of the Corrupt Employee

Emma Rauf, a 34-year-old Emirates check-in worker based at Manchester Airport, played a key role in the scheme. She allowed suitcases stuffed with cash to pass through, even when they exceeded weight restrictions. During her absences, she instructed colleagues to handle excess luggage in the same manner. Rauf also made inquiries after a courier was intercepted by Border Force to help prevent future seizures. She traveled to and from the UAE seven times over seven months, often calling in sick.

Violence and Intimidation

The scheme unraveled after £788,455 was confiscated at UK airports in two incidents, prompting a National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation. In October 2018, Rauf and her brother Ben Royle, 32, collected £406,500 in illicit cash and stored it in her car. The vehicle was broken into, and the money stolen. The alleged ringleader ordered the siblings to take lie detector tests to prove their innocence. Subsequently, a gunman fired shots at their parents' home in Hale, Altrincham, striking the front door and a lounge window. One bullet passed through a sofa and embedded in a wall. NCA branch commander Jon Hughes stated, "This crime group smuggled cash from crime out of the UK on an industrial scale... Cash is the lifeblood of organised crime groups. It fuels violence and insecurity."
