A confidential briefing document submitted to the UK government and the Civil Aviation Authority warns that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is causing jet fuel prices to double, which could force airlines to cut flights and increase fares. The document, from Airlines UK, which represents major carriers including British Airways, easyJet, Jet2, Loganair, Ryanair, TUI, UPS, and Virgin Atlantic, highlights that fuel accounts for approximately one-third of airline operating costs.
Impact on Summer Holidays
ITV Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid reported on the document, stating, "You can forget about your summer holidays. That is the stark warning issued to some air passengers hoping to fly abroad this year." Co-host Ed Balls added that UK operators are calling for emergency measures, including help to protect fuel supplies, reduce taxes on tickets, and waive strict compensation rules for passengers.
Airlines' Requests
According to ITV GMB's Nick Dixon, airlines are requesting the government to relieve or reduce air passenger duty to lower travel costs, allow night-time flights to maintain schedules, and scrap compensation for cancelled or delayed flights caused by fuel shortages. These measures would significantly impact passengers, potentially leading to tactical flight cancellations of loss-making routes.
Current Situation
Some airlines have already taken steps. Luftanza, a European airline, has cancelled thousands of short-haul flights to conserve jet fuel. EasyJet and Virgin Atlantic have expressed concern about the coming weeks, with Virgin Atlantic cancelling one long-haul route and EasyJet uncertain about fuel availability beyond mid-May.
The Department for Transport stated it is "continuing to work with fuel suppliers, with airlines, and international counterparts on our contingency emergency planning to ensure that people keep moving and businesses are supported while the conflict is ongoing." However, the situation remains vague and concerning for passengers who have spent significant sums on flights or are planning summer trips.
