Motorhome and campervan drivers now have access to a new £10 overnight parking option at a popular tourist spot in Pembrokeshire. Pembrokeshire County Council has launched a trial scheme for overnight motorhome parking at the Goodwick Moor car park, The Parrog, near Fishguard Port.
Details of the Trial
The two-year trial, initially proposed in 2024, is now operational. It allows motorhomes and campervans to stay overnight for a fee of £10, with a maximum stay of one night. Additional restrictions apply to ensure the site is used appropriately.
Reactions from Local Councillor
Fishguard North West councillor Steve Hughes expressed his support for the initiative but noted that it does not go far enough to meet the expectations of the growing 'vanlife' community. He stated: "I'm pleased to see this initiative finally up and running, but it doesn't go far enough in my opinion to offer the services expected from the rapidly increasing 'vanlife' community. Whether on holiday or permanently touring, this is a financial resource many towns should be looking to take advantage of."
Hughes added: "This isn't, as some may fear, competition for established campsites but a new set of customers looking for a safe overnight park-up who wouldn't otherwise choose a campsite, but park in lay-bys and other unregulated areas. I look forward to seeing how this trial period works and hope that further services can be added in future."
Background and Rules
The scheme was originally agreed to include car parks at North Beach, Tenby; Goodwick Moor, Goodwick; Townsmoor, Narberth; and Western Way, Pembroke Dock, with a £10 charge for an 18-month trial. However, the plan was later dropped following opposition. Clear rules have now been introduced for the Goodwick Moor site, with signs outlining strict conditions:
- Overnight parking and sleeping is allowed for a maximum of one night only. Extended stays are prohibited, and vehicles must move on after one night.
- No furniture may be stored outside the vehicle, and no awnings or other covers may be erected. This is to keep the area tidy and prevent it from becoming a semi-permanent campsite.
