Petrol and Diesel Drivers Face £5,690 Car Tax Hike from April 2026
Petrol and diesel drivers across the United Kingdom are being warned about a significant financial burden, with new Vehicle Excise Duty rates set to impose a massive £5,690 cost on the most polluting vehicles starting from April 2026. The Labour Party government officially rolled out these updated tax rules on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, impacting all drivers and road users nationwide.
First Year Rates Doubled for High-Emission Vehicles
The new regulations include adjustments to the first year rate, which is a flat fee paid by motorists upon purchasing new vehicles. This applies to a wide range of cars, including petrol, diesel, hybrid, and zero-emission models. Labour Party Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed that first year rates for cars emitting more than 76 grams of CO2 per kilometre would see rates double compared to previous years.
Specifically, the most polluting petrol and diesel vehicles that emit over 225g/km will now face an enormous £5,690 charge. This represents a substantial £200 increase from the £5,490 paid in the previous year, marking one of the largest hikes in recent motoring tax history.
Impact on Popular Car Brands and Drivers
According to industry experts, these substantial tax charges will affect 59 vehicles from popular car brands, potentially impacting thousands of drivers across the country. The timing of these increases is particularly challenging, as many other motoring costs are also projected to rise throughout the year.
Imran Malek, corporate sales manager at TrackDays.co.uk, commented on the broader context of motoring expenses. He stated, "While the long-term data shows petrol and oil prices are volatile, they have risen far less than other motoring costs, not least motoring tax and car insurance, over the last decade."
Rhydian Jones, a car insurance expert from Confused.com, emphasized the widespread implications of these changes. He noted, "These increases will affect drivers across the country, so it's important to know what you will be expected to pay. Your car tax amount can vary depending on when your vehicle was first registered and the type of fuel it uses."

As drivers navigate these increased costs, experts advise staying informed about specific tax obligations based on vehicle registration dates and fuel types to avoid unexpected financial strain.
