Birmingham's A45 Coventry Road Shut for Weekend Sprint Bus Works
Key Birmingham road closed for two days this weekend

A major route into Birmingham city centre will be shut for an entire weekend this month to allow for crucial public transport upgrades.

Weekend Closure Details

Coventry Road (A45) into Birmingham will be fully closed at Lyndon Road in Small Heath. The closure is scheduled to begin at 11pm on Friday, 9 January 2026 and will remain in force until late on Sunday, 11 January 2026.

The shutdown is necessary to facilitate work on the new Sprint bus priority corridor. This major transport project aims to create a seamless, high-frequency bus link connecting Walsall with Birmingham city centre, Solihull, and Birmingham Airport by joining the A34 and A45 corridors.

Diversions and Travel Advice

Transport for West Midlands has confirmed that signed diversions will be in place for all traffic during the closure. Motorists are being strongly advised to plan their journeys in advance and to avoid the area if possible.

Authorities have specifically requested that drivers steer clear of using Hob's Moat Road and Damson Parkway as alternative routes to help minimise disruption in those areas. Local bus services will also be diverted, and the bus stop located on Lyndon Road will be temporarily suspended for the duration of the works.

Ongoing Traffic Restrictions

This weekend closure is part of a wider, phased programme of improvements to bus infrastructure and shelters along the A45 corridor. Some traffic restrictions are already in effect in the vicinity.

Currently, one lane is closed on the A45 Coventry Road in Yardley between Lyndon Road and Gilbertstone Avenue. Additionally, there is an outbound lane closure towards Birmingham Airport operating between Wagon Lane and the Wheatsheaf.

Transport officials are urging all road users to allow extra time for their travels this weekend and to follow the official diversion routes. The works form a key part of the region's investment in faster and more reliable public transport connections.
