Cornwall Council Enforces 24/7 20mph Speed Limit for 8 Months
New 20mph Speed Limit in Cornwall for Eight Months

Thousands of motorists in Cornwall are now subject to a new 20mph speed limit that operates around the clock, seven days a week. The temporary restriction has been introduced by Cornwall Council and is expected to remain in force for approximately eight months.

Details of the New Traffic Order

The council has officially enacted the measure on Clodgey Lane and the access road to the former Flambards theme park. According to the signed order, the 20mph limit covers a stretch of approximately 475 metres on Clodgey Lane and 92 metres on the Flambards access road.

The order came into effect on November 10, 2025, and is legally permitted to remain for up to 18 months, though the council anticipates the works will be finished by July 7, 2026. The order can be extended by the Secretary of State for Transport if necessary.

Council's Rationale and Driver Backlash

In a statement, Cornwall Council explained that the restriction is essential for public and worker safety. "The Order is needed because works are being executed on or near the road to carry out construction and surfacing works, ensuring the safety of workers and the public during this extended period of activity," a council representative said.

The decision has sparked frustration among some drivers. One motorist commented, "This is the norm in Wales. Driving is even more stressful then ever, tailgating, impatient drivers and cyclist who overtake left and right. Plus those who speed will continue to speed."

Another expressed criticism of the local authorities, stating, "What is it with Labour and Lib Dem councils!!... It’s typical ‘crack a nut with a sledgehammer’ that you see consistently from people in charge with zero common sense."

Looking Ahead

For the next eight months, drivers using this route will need to maintain a reduced speed at all hours. The council's primary focus remains on completing the construction and surfacing works efficiently to lift the temporary order by the projected July 2026 date.
