Pothole Damage Costs UK Motorists £164 on Average, Survey Reveals

A recent poll of 2,000 car owners has uncovered that potholes are causing significant financial and physical harm to drivers across the UK. The study, commissioned by CarSupermarket.com, found that 32 per cent of respondents have experienced vehicle damage due to potholes, with the average repair bill standing at £164.

Common Types of Damage and Injuries

The most frequent issues reported include punctured tyres at 55 per cent, suspension problems at 28 per cent, and damaged alloys at 26 per cent. Alarmingly, more than one in 20 drivers, or six per cent, have suffered physical injuries such as whiplash, back pain, and neck pain as a result of hitting potholes.

Matt Barrick, CEO of CarSupermarket.com, commented on the findings, stating, "Potholes are a persistent problem for drivers, so it is no surprise they rank among the biggest frustrations on UK roads. They can cause damage, create safety concerns, and add unnecessary costs for motorists."

Deteriorating Road Conditions and Driver Behaviour

Nearly half of those surveyed believe road conditions have worsened over the past five years, with 47 per cent describing them as "much worse" and 21 per cent rating the current state as "very poor." In response, CarSupermarket.com has initiated a campaign to repair and recondition potholes, aligning with its focus on reconditioned vehicles.

The research also highlighted other major annoyances for motorists, with top grievances including:

  • Drivers not indicating (59 per cent)
  • Tailgating (57 per cent)
  • Drivers using phones (54 per cent)
  • Parking across two spots (48 per cent)
  • People crossing roads without looking (40 per cent)

Barrick added, "The research shows that many other frustrations come down to driver behaviour. More patience, awareness, and consideration for other road users can go a long way in making the roads safer and less stressful for everyone."

Reporting Potholes and Road Safety Concerns

Despite the widespread issue, 41 per cent of drivers admitted they do not know how to report a pothole for repair. Barrick advised, "It is very easy to report a pothole or damage to a road. You can visit your local council’s website or report it by phone. Councils will investigate within 10 working days."

The study further revealed that 22 per cent of motorists avoid at least 11 potholes on a typical drive, and 37 per cent are forced to swerve to miss them. Additionally, 56 per cent believe road users are less courteous now than five years ago, and on average, drivers rate themselves 7.45 out of 10 for driving skill, while rating others at 5.97.
