Motorists across the UK are being urged to carry out a simple five-minute check on their vehicles, as experts warn that misaligned headlights are dangerously dazzling other road users.
The Real Cause of Dazzling Headlights
While many drivers blame modern LED technology for increasing glare, experts reveal the true culprit is often simpler. Mark Reece, a motoring specialist at RevMonkey, explained that headlights positioned at an excessive angle are frequently to blame.
"Instead of lighting up the road, they're pointing directly at oncoming traffic, which can completely dazzle another driver and cause dangerous reactions behind the wheel," Mr Reece stated. He emphasised that this is a common misconception, with motorists incorrectly assuming the problem lies solely with new lighting technology.
A Simple Fix for Safer Roads
Mr Reece described the solution as straightforward, stating it's a "simple fix that can make a huge difference." He advised: "You might think your lights are fine because you can see clearly, but if they're angled too high, you're putting everyone else at risk. Taking five minutes to check your beam aim helps keep everyone safer, especially during darker autumn evenings."
Nicholas Lyes from IAM RoadSmart supported this call to action, offering a "timely reminder to check headlight aim, ensure lenses are clean, and replace any faulty bulbs promptly and carefully."
A Widespread Problem for British Drivers
The issue becomes particularly acute as the clocks go back and evenings darken. RAC senior policy officer Rod Dennis confirmed this is a major concern for many motorists.
“Unfortunately, for a lot of drivers the annual onset of darker evenings coincides with another unwelcome arrival – that of overly-bright headlights that they believe make driving more difficult due to dazzle and discomfort,” he said.
Mr Dennis highlighted the severity of the problem, noting that headlight glare is the leading cause of nervousness for drivers adapting to night driving. He acknowledged that while brighter headlights can improve a driver's view of the road ahead, a balance must be struck.
The RAC looks forward to a forthcoming Government report, hoping it will explain why so many drivers report struggling with dazzling headlights, whether due to technological changes, the increasing popularity of higher vehicles, or other factors.
