New data has revealed a staggering number of speeding offences across the West Midlands, with almost 100,000 motorists penalised for breaking the law on residential roads.
The Scale of Speeding in the Region
Information obtained by BirminghamLive through freedom of information requests shows that a massive 99,416 drivers were recorded travelling between 31mph and 39mph in 30mph zones during 2025. This high number is particularly alarming as it highlights how common speeding is, even though the majority of the region's roads are not monitored by permanent speed cameras.
These offences were detected either by fixed speed cameras or during police operations using mobile camera vans parked at the roadside.
A Stark Warning for Birmingham Motorists
This data serves as a significant warning to drivers in Birmingham, as the city council plans to reduce speed limits on more than 25 roads in the new year. Council bosses have confirmed that the majority of roads in the city will have a maximum speed limit of 30mph, with many routes currently set at 40mph being downgraded.
The problem is not confined to minor speed infringements. The data also uncovered thousands of drivers reaching dangerously high speeds:
- 61,943 drivers were recorded speeding between 40mph and 49mph.
- 28,410 were caught between 50mph and 59mph.
- 6,169 motorists were clocked doing between 80mph and 89mph.
- A further 929 were recorded between 90mph and 99mph.
Extreme Speeders on Midlands Roads
Perhaps most shockingly, the data also identified drivers reaching extreme speeds well over 100mph. The fastest recorded speeds involved two vehicles captured travelling at speeds between 150mph and 159mph, highlighting a serious danger on the region's roads, many of which were likely motorways.
This comprehensive data provides a clear picture of driving habits in the West Midlands and underscores the importance of the upcoming speed limit changes aimed at improving road safety for all residents.
