Road Closures Begin in South Weald on July 6
A series of temporary traffic orders will bring road closures, diversions, and overnight works across the Borough of Brentwood in July, according to Essex County Council public notices published in the Brentwood Gazette and on the Public Notice Portal. Closures are due to begin on Monday, July 6, 2026, in South Weald, followed by further works from Monday, July 13, 2026, in Stondon Massey, Mountnessing, Little Warley, and Brentwood, and additional overnight and short-duration closures from Tuesday, July 28, 2026, in West Horndon and Doddinghurst. Where stated by the council, dates may vary and will be shown on local signage and on One.Network. Several orders came into force on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, with others to come into effect on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, each lasting up to 18 months if required.
Key Closures and Dates
Nags Head Lane, South Weald (with no right turn from Brook Street)
When: From Monday, July 6, 2026, for 14 days (water drainage installation by Crest Nicholson). Extent: From Brook Street for approximately 145m south west. Diversion: Brook Street, Mascalls Lane, Warley Road and vice versa; access only into Nags Head Lane. A temporary ‘no right turn’ from Brook Street into Nags Head Lane will operate for the duration of the closure.
Ongar Road, Stondon Massey (temporary clearway in force)
When: From Monday, July 13, 2026, for 26 days (culvert repair works by Essex County Council). Extent: Between Chivers Road and Nine Ashes Road, approximately 715m. Restrictions: A temporary ‘no waiting, no loading and no stopping’ clearway on the closed section; parking and waiting restrictions in the area will be temporarily amended during the closure. Diversion: Ongar Road, Tipps Cross Lane, Hook End Lane, Hook End Road, Blackmore Road, Ongar Road, Brentwood Road, Stondon Road and Ongar Road, and vice versa.
Little Warley Hall Lane, West Horndon (near St Mary’s Lane)
When: From Monday, July 13, 2026, for 11 days (duct laying by Openreach). Extent: About 150m, approximately 375m north west of the St Mary’s Lane junction. Diversion: Southbound via Little Warley Hall Lane, Warley Hall Lane, St Mary’s Lane, Childerditch Lane, A127 and Little Warley Hall Lane; northbound via Little Warley Hall Lane, A127, B186, St Mary’s Lane, Warley Hall Lane and Little Warley Hall Lane.
Swallows Cross Road/Thoby Lane, Mountnessing (overnight)
When: From Monday, July 13, 2026, for three nights, 7.30pm to 11.30pm (drainage works by Essex County Council). Extent: From Wyatts Green Road to Roman Road, approximately 2,260m. Diversion: B1002, Fryerning Lane, Blackmore Road, Mill Green Road, Ingatestone Road, Blackmore Road, Chelmsford Road, Ingatestone Road, Mountnessing Road and vice versa.
The Limes, Brentwood
When: From Monday, July 13, 2026, for two days (pole replacement by Openreach Ltd). Extent: From Lime Avenue to Beech Avenue, approximately 85m. Diversion: The Limes, Lime Avenue and Beech Avenue, and vice versa.
Church Lane, Doddinghurst
When: From Tuesday, July 28, 2026, for three days (chamber replacement by Affinity Water Ltd). Extent: Approximately 40m, about 10m south west of the Dagwood Lane junction. Diversion: Church Lane, Stocks Lane, Blackmore Road, Place Farm Lane and vice versa.
Little Warley Hall Lane, West Horndon (overnight, near A127)
When: From Tuesday, July 28, 2026, for one night, 11pm to 6am (retaining wall inspection by Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd). Extent: Approximately 20m, about 1,000m south of the A127 junction. Diversion: Northbound via Little Warley Hall Lane, Magpie Lane, Bird Lane, Warley Street, A127, Little Warley Hall Lane; southbound via Little Warley Hall Lane, A127, Childerditch Lane, Magpie Lane and Little Warley Hall Lane.
Various residential roads, Brentwood (phased works over 18 months)
When: Within 18 months from Wednesday, June 24, 2026, with exact dates shown on One.Network and advance warning signs. Roads: Shevon Way (Westbourne Drive to end, approx. 400m), Lindsey Close (to end, approx. 105m), Westbourne Drive (Mascalls Lane to Shevon Way, approx. 305m), Lilley Close (to end, approx. 110m). Restrictions: Temporary closures and a clearway (‘no waiting, no loading and no stopping’) when signed; no diversion routes are available for these cul-de-sacs. Access: Emergency services access maintained; residents to be informed by letter or leaflet drop; enquiries via the Essex County Council Contact Centre on 0345 603 7631.
Legal Effect and Duration
The council states the measures are being implemented under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Where indicated in the notices, the legal orders either came into effect on Wednesday June 24 2026 or will come into effect on Wednesday July 8 2026, and may remain in force for up to 18 months or until the works are completed, whichever is earlier.
