Motorists are experiencing delays on the M42 near Junction 6, Bickenhill Interchange, on Sunday, June 7, due to ongoing roadworks and a separate obstruction incident.
Roadworks and Obstruction Cause Disruption
According to Google Maps, roadworks are in place along the motorway adjacent to Junction 6. National Highways has confirmed that improvement works are continuing as part of a broader upgrade to the motorway. Meanwhile, traffic monitoring service Inrix reported that the southbound carriageway was partially blocked this afternoon due to an obstruction between Junction 10 (A5 Watling Street, Tamworth) and Junction 9 (A4097 Kingsbury Road, Curdworth/Coleshill).
Inrix initially stated: "M42 Southbound partially blocked, slow traffic due to obstruction on the road between J10 A5 Watling Street (Tamworth) and J9 A4097 Kingsbury Road (Curdworth/Coleshill)." However, an update later confirmed: "Road cleared and traffic returned to normal, obstruction removed on M42 Southbound between J10 and J9."
Congestion Near Birmingham Airport and NEC
Despite the clearance, live traffic data from Google Maps shows congestion building along Junction 6, the key exit and entrance for Birmingham Airport and the NEC. The motorway is marked with shades of yellow and red, indicating significant delays. This could cause problems for drivers heading to the airport or travelling through Solihull on Sunday.
