A severe multi-vehicle collision on the M6 motorway has left three people fighting for life and brought chaos to one of Britain's busiest transport corridors during the Thursday evening rush hour.
Emergency Response on the M6
West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to the northbound carriageway between junctions 5 and 6 at approximately 5:15 PM, responding to reports of a serious multi-vehicle incident. The crash involved several cars and resulted in catastrophic injuries for three individuals.
Multiple ambulance crews, paramedic officers, and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford were dispatched to the scene. The Critical Care Car also attended, bringing specialist trauma medics to support the emergency operation.
Critical Injuries and Rescue Operation
Three patients sustained life-threatening injuries in the devastating collision and required immediate advanced trauma care at the scene before being transported to major trauma centres.
One man, driving a black Audi, suffered multiple serious injuries and was carefully extricated with assistance from fire service colleagues. He received advanced treatment before being conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham on alert.
Meanwhile, the drivers of two other vehicles also sustained critical injuries requiring emergency medical intervention before being transferred to the same major trauma centre for specialist care.
Major Traffic Disruption
The collision caused complete closure of the M6 northbound between the affected junctions, creating gridlock across the region during peak travel times. National Highways implemented diversions, but significant delays stretched for miles as emergency services worked at the scene.
Commuters faced hours of disruption as traffic was diverted through local routes, with congestion affecting surrounding areas including Castle Bromwich and the A38 approaching Birmingham city centre.
Ongoing Investigation
West Midlands Police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Officers remained on scene throughout the evening, conducting initial investigations and coordinating recovery of the vehicles involved.
The motorway was expected to remain closed for several hours as collision investigators examined the scene and recovery operations took place. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
