M6 Chaos as Driver Travels 6km in Wrong Direction
A motorist driving the wrong way on the M6 motorway came within inches of causing a catastrophic head-on collision, according to Staffordshire Police. The incident, which occurred on the evening of Saturday, November 22, triggered a major emergency response after the force received a flood of calls from alarmed members of the public.
Emergency Response and Motorway Closure
Staffordshire Police confirmed they received in excess of 30 emergency 999 calls reporting a vehicle travelling southbound on the northbound carriageway. The driver of a red Ford had entered the motorway incorrectly at Junction 15.
To protect the public and prevent a potential disaster, the police took immediate action. The northbound motorway was closed at Junction 14, a measure designed to create a safe zone and allow officers to intercept the vehicle. A spokesperson for the Staffordshire Road Crime Team stated they were prepared to put themselves "in harm's way to protect the public."
A Miraculous Avoidance
The wrong-way vehicle continued its journey for over six kilometres before it eventually came to a stop. Police reported the car halted in lane four, mere inches from a head-on collision with oncoming traffic.
Miraculously, the incident resulted in no injuries and no damage to any vehicles. The driver, described by authorities as "confused," has temporarily surrendered their driving licence pending a full review by the DVLA and medical professionals.
Staffordshire Police thanked the public for their swift actions in making the emergency calls and for adhering to the motorway signals during the closure.
