Major A-Road Speed Limit Revisions Proposed for North Lincolnshire Routes
Speed Limit Changes Proposed for A18 and A1077 Roads

Targeted Speed Limit Revisions Proposed for Key A-Roads in North Lincolnshire

Motorists traveling on two significant A-roads in England are being consulted on proposed modifications to speed restrictions, which authorities describe as sensible and evidence-based changes designed to prioritise safety. The local council is urging residents and drivers to participate in the consultation process regarding adjustments planned for sections of the A18 and A1077.

Council Leadership Emphasises Safety and Practicality

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, stated: "This initiative focuses on delivering fundamental improvements for our communities. When roads traverse or border villages, the speed limits should accurately represent that environment. These are prudent, focused alterations that place safety at the forefront while continuing to facilitate efficient travel across the road network."

He further connected these proposals to broader infrastructure investments, adding: "Coupled with the substantial funding we are allocating to road maintenance and enhancements, this is about developing thoroughfares that inspire user confidence."

Evidence-Based Adjustments for Specific Locations

Cllr Neil Poole, deputy leader and cabinet member for highways, explained the rationale behind the review: "We conduct periodic assessments of speed limits to ensure their continued suitability. These recommendations are founded on official guidance, empirical data, and local contextual factors—they are not indiscriminate reductions."

He elaborated on the expected benefits: "Through implementing modest yet impactful modifications in appropriate areas, we can bolster safety, diminish potential hazards, and promote more fluid travel experiences."

Detailed Changes for Each Affected Route

The proposed revisions are location-specific:

  • On the A18 at Melton Ross: The changes aim to introduce reduced speed zones nearer to the village periphery and crucial junctions. This strategy is intended to encourage drivers to decelerate naturally upon approaching populated areas, thereby lowering the likelihood of accidents.
  • On the A1077 at Barton-upon-Humber: A modified limit seeks to establish greater uniformity along a segment where traffic moves away from residential districts, ensuring a consistent and predictable driving environment.

Formal Process and Public Engagement

The council has clarified the statutory procedure, noting that recent Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) will be published with specified effective dates. The authority also outlined the legal recourse available, stating that any challenges to an order's validity must be lodged with the High Court within six weeks of its enactment, based on grounds related to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

The council encourages queries and requests for additional information, emphasising the importance of community feedback in shaping these road safety measures.
