Tory Leader Proposes Scrapping Penalty Points for 20mph Speed Limit Breaches
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has announced a controversial proposal to eliminate penalty points for drivers who breach 20mph speed limits if her party secures victory in the upcoming general election. Speaking on Monday, April 13, during an interview with Nick Ferrari on LBC's Breakfast show, Badenoch argued that current enforcement measures require significant rebalancing to prioritize public safety over minor infractions.
Environmental Focus vs. Dangerous Driving
Badenoch emphasized that 20mph zones are primarily implemented for environmental reasons rather than safety concerns. "I think the 20 mile per hour zones that are there are mostly around the environment, I don't think that's what people should be getting points on their licence for," she stated. The Tory leader insisted that penalty points should be reserved for genuinely dangerous driving behaviors, noting that "22mph is very different from driving dangerously."
Her comments followed a specific case involving a London doctor who accumulated nine penalty points on his driving licence after being caught driving at 22mph in a 20mph zone. Badenoch used this example to highlight what she perceives as excessive enforcement against law-abiding citizens.
Call for Police Prioritization
During the interview, Badenoch articulated a broader vision for police resource allocation. "What I want is for the police to be doing the things that everybody else can't do," she explained, urging officers to focus on serious crimes rather than minor traffic violations. Her priorities include:
- Catching burglars and shoplifters
- Addressing violent offenders who endanger communities
- Dealing with youth involved in criminal activities during holidays
"I want us to catch crooks, put them behind bars and if they're really bad, keep them there as long as we possibly can," Badenoch asserted, reinforcing her commitment to tougher measures against significant criminal behavior.
Context of Expanding 20mph Zones
This proposal emerges against the backdrop of ongoing expansion of contentious 20mph zones across England. While these zones aim to reduce emissions and enhance pedestrian safety in urban areas, they have sparked considerable debate among motorists and policymakers regarding appropriate enforcement strategies.
Badenoch's suggestion represents a potential shift in traffic regulation philosophy, distinguishing between environmental compliance and direct safety threats. The Conservative leader maintains that "the law abiding people in this country are having to deal with more and more" unnecessary regulatory burdens, advocating for a system that better distinguishes between minor infractions and genuine dangers on the roads.
