EuroMillions Winner Dies in Hit-and-Run After Saving Policeman

Anthony Canty, a 39-year-old EuroMillions winner who saved a police officer's life just days before winning £1 million, has tragically died in a suspected hit-and-run collision.

Fatal Collision in Tiptree

Mr. Canty was cycling at 6:30 am on May 21 in Tiptree, Essex, when the collision occurred. He was rushed to hospital but died four days later. An 18-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink and drugs, and failing to stop at the scene. Police confirmed the individual remains under investigation while inquiries continue.

Heroic Act and Lottery Win

The tragic news comes just six years after Mr. Canty performed CPR on a police officer who suffered a heart attack on a bus in April 2020. Only a month later, he won the £1 million EuroMillions prize. The police officer, who was airlifted to hospital and spent five days in intensive care, told Mr. Canty that "good karma happens to good people."

Tributes Pour In

Tributes on social media describe Mr. Canty as a "true gentleman." David Beckham's sister Lynne Beckham-Briggs posted: "Another good one taken too soon! Anthony Canty you will be truly missed! Such a lovely man." Gary Hill wrote: "Still can’t believe this is true... RIP Anthony Canty such a truly nice guy." Sophie Shane added: "Absolutely heartbreaking... he lit up every room he was in." Kirsty Morton expressed: "Absolutely speechless... life is so unfair."

Family and Life After Win

Mr. Canty, who had two daughters with wife Katie, won the £1 million prize in the May 5, 2020 draw. Initially thinking he had won £100,000, his wife checked the numbers and confirmed they were millionaires. He planned to buy a new house and take his family to Disneyland. Despite his wealth, he continued working for a local building materials supplier until his death.

Police Appeal

Essex Police are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who saw or has dashcam footage of a black Ford KA in the area around the time of the collision. A spokesperson said: "Officers would still particularly like to hear from anyone who saw or has footage of a black Ford KA being driven in the area around the time of the collision that morning. Please quote 174 of 21 May."
