McDonald's has made a fresh attempt to open a drive-thru restaurant in Stirchley, one year after its previous proposal was rejected by local residents. The fast-food giant is now seeking community feedback on revised plans for a site on the corner of Hazelwell Lane and Pershore Road.
Background to the New Bid
In 2024, McDonald's announced its intention to build a restaurant on the same location. However, following opposition from more than 1,800 people, the company decided not to submit a planning application. Now, the firm has launched a new consultation website, stating it is 'committed to bring forward a high-quality new restaurant for the community'.
Stirchley is renowned for its vibrant independent business scene, including a burger restaurant run by former University of Birmingham students. The proposed McDonald's site has also been considered for a community-led development by a local cooperative.
Details of the Revised Plans
According to McDonald's consultation website: 'Stirchley has long been an area where we have been keen to invest, and we remain committed to bringing forward a high-quality new restaurant for the community.' The company says the new drive-thru would 'enhance local food choice and provide new jobs for local people, while revitalising a vacant site that currently detracts from the appearance of the surrounding area'.
McDonald's estimates the restaurant would generate between £50,000 and £60,000 in business rates for Birmingham City Council. It also claims the drive-thru would 'complement the options available in the local area rather than competing with them' and would be run by a local franchisee.
Addressing Previous Concerns
Litter was a major concern raised by locals during the 2024 consultation. In response, McDonald's has pledged to undertake a minimum of three daily litter patrols, collecting all rubbish within a 150-metre radius of the branch. The company also says the new restaurant would include tree and shrub planting to enhance the area.
Timeline and How to Comment
Residents can submit feedback on the plans until July 20. After that, McDonald's will review the responses before submitting a formal planning application to Birmingham City Council. According to the consultation website, the company hopes to submit the application this summer, with validation and statutory consultation by the council also expected this summer. A planning decision is anticipated by winter.
The consultation website is available for anyone wishing to submit comments.
