The British Heart Foundation (BHF), which operates 680 stores across the UK, has announced plans to close around 150 charity shops by March 2028. The decision comes amid rising costs and changing shopping habits that have created an exceptionally challenging trading environment for the charity.
Closure Timeline
Ninety branches are set to shut by March 2027, with the remaining 60 closures occurring by March 2028. The charity emphasized this was a difficult decision following a thorough review to ensure the long-term sustainability of BHF retail operations.
Chief Executive Statement
Chief executive Dr Charmaine Griffiths said: "Like most retailers, we are facing an exceptionally challenging trading environment." She noted that the charity is not immune to the pressures affecting the wider retail sector.
Impact on Supporters
Supporters can continue shopping and donating at affected stores until they close. After closures, donations will still be accepted through nearby shops, donation points, and online services. The charity will announce specific store locations on its website once all affected colleagues have been personally notified.
Future of BHF Retail
The closures represent a significant downsizing of the BHF's retail footprint, but the charity remains committed to its fundraising mission. The British Heart Foundation continues to rely on donations and volunteers to support its research into heart and circulatory diseases.
