A Birmingham mosque is making a significant impact on child food insecurity by distributing food parcels to families in need. Masjid Al-Falaah in Handsworth supplies up to 30 food parcels every week to nine local schools, ensuring children have access to nutritious meals.
Community Support Through Schools
Adil Parkar, general secretary of Masjid Al-Falaah, explained that many families hesitate to ask for help directly due to pride. Instead, they reach out to schools, which then contact the mosque. Parkar noted that for some children, the food parcel may be their only meal of the day, highlighting the severity of child poverty in the area.
Funding and Partnerships
The food parcels are funded primarily through charitable donations from the community. The mosque also partners with organizations like Islamic Relief and applies for grants to sustain the initiative. Recently, the mosque collaborated with Islamic Relief for a major charity event during the Islamic festival of Qurbani, distributing meat and food parcels to families affected by the cost of living crisis.
Parkar emphasized the heartbreaking reality of the situation but expressed gratitude for the community's generosity. The mosque remains committed to serving those in need, providing indirect support through schools to maintain dignity for recipients.
