Bridgend Man Prepares for Bristol Channel Swim to Support Dementia UK
Aeron Davies, a 26-year-old from Bridgend, is gearing up for a formidable challenge: swimming the 12-mile stretch of the Bristol Channel in summer 2026. His goal is to raise funds for Dementia UK, motivated by his grandfather's recent diagnosis of dementia in December 2025.
Inspired by Resilience and Family
Aeron's grandfather, a former serviceman who fought in Malaya and later worked as a landscaper and builder, has always been known for his resilience and positive attitude. Despite the diagnosis, he remains in good spirits, which inspired Aeron to take on this physically demanding feat. "Watching someone you love gradually lose their cognitive ability is incredibly difficult," Aeron said. "But my grandfather still smiles every day, and that's what pushed me to do something meaningful."
Facing a Tough Open Water Challenge
The Bristol Channel is renowned for its strong tides, cold temperatures, and unpredictable conditions, making it one of the toughest open water swims in the UK. Aeron is currently training regularly to prepare for the crossing, documenting his journey on social media to encourage others to support the cause.
Fundraising for Admiral Nurses
Funds raised from the swim will support Admiral Nurses, specialist dementia nurses provided by Dementia UK. These nurses offer practical and emotional support to families affected by dementia. "I want to raise as much as possible to help people going through what my family is experiencing," Aeron added. "No one should have to face dementia alone."
Community Involvement and Support
Aeron also hopes to involve the local community through fundraising events and partnerships with local organisations. He aims to raise awareness and funds to make a significant impact for those dealing with dementia.
