Derby Volunteer Treks Great Wall, Raises Funds for Air Ambulance
Derby volunteer's Great Wall trek for Air Ambulance

A shop volunteer from Derby has triumphantly returned from the adventure of a lifetime, having trekked the historic Great Wall of China to raise crucial funds for The Air Ambulance Service (TAAS).

An Unforgettable Challenge

Shamim Khan embarked on a week-long, intense expedition alongside a team of fellow fundraisers. The challenge tested their fitness and resolve with daily walks exceeding six hours. In total, the team conquered more than 3,300 metres of ascent, navigating steep inclines, dramatic descents, and rugged terrain.

Reflecting on her journey, Shamim said, "I have returned from the most wonderful adventure of my life! I still can’t quite believe I can tick it off my bucket list!" She added that while she expected the stunning vistas, she was overwhelmed by the inspiring people she met along the way.

Conquering the Wall's Toughest Sections

The route was demanding, taking the team across significantly eroded sections of the Wall that required excellent balance and a head for heights. Shamim's success was underpinned by months of dedicated training, supported by her friends and family.

Fortunately, the weather was mostly on their side, offering dry and sunny conditions with some snow at higher altitudes. The breathtaking views from ancient watchtowers, looking across mountain ridges in deep blue shades, left a lasting impression on all the participants.

The Final Push and Lifesaving Impact

The most strenuous part of the trek was saved for the final day. The climbers ascended the formidable 'Heavenly Staircase' up to the 'Heroes’ Platform', the steepest section of the entire climb. Despite mist and fatigue, the sense of accomplishment was immense.

"The sense of achievement I had in reaching my goal, in order to raise vital funds for our helicopters cannot be surpassed," Shamim stated. "Going that extra mile is what the Air Ambulance is all about!"

After walking more than 10 miles daily for a full week, Shamim completed the challenge injury-free and even joined a smaller group for an extra stretch along a derelict part of the Wall.

Her fundraising efforts directly support TAAS's critical mission of providing rapid response and advanced medical care to serious incidents across five counties. The charity also operates the National Children’s Air Ambulance (NCAA), which helps critically ill children and babies across the UK. Every donation is essential to keep the charity’s helicopters flying and its crews ready for action.
