Pupils and staff at a Devon technical college have rallied together to deliver their most successful community support drive to date, combining generosity with practical financial lessons.
A Tradition of Giving Back
South Devon University Technical College (UTC) in Newton Abbot, which is part of the Education South West trust, has upheld its annual tradition of supporting Teignbridge Homeless Action Today (THAT). Since October, the school community has been gathering essential donations for the local foodbank, a initiative deeply valued by students and staff alike.
The £5 Budget Challenge
This year, the school added an innovative twist to the collection. Students were set a challenge: to purchase as many foodbank items as possible using just a £5 budget. This element of friendly competition encouraged creativity and teamwork, while providing a hands-on lesson in money management and the realities of living on a tight budget.
The result was transformative. The initiative culminated in the largest collection the UTC has ever achieved, with an impressive volume of essential supplies delivered to support local people in need. The school has expressed its sincere gratitude to all students, parents, and staff members for their generous contributions.
Life Skills Beyond the Classroom
Claire Plumb, Headteacher at South Devon UTC, said: "I am incredibly proud of our students, staff and families for coming together to support such an important local cause. The foodbank collection is something our community really values, and this year’s response has been outstanding." She highlighted the dual benefit of the project, adding: "The £5 challenge also gave students the opportunity to develop real-life budgeting skills while making a positive difference to others."
Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West, echoed this sentiment, stating: "South Devon UTC continues to demonstrate how education goes beyond the classroom. This initiative not only supports those in need within the local community, but also helps students build essential life skills such as teamwork, empathy and financial awareness." He concluded: "It is wonderful to see such strong community spirit across the school."
The successful campaign underscores the college's ongoing commitment to fostering both academic excellence and active citizenship in the Teignbridge area of Devon.
