A family from Lincoln is embarking on a heartfelt fundraising campaign for the baby-hearts charity Tiny Tickers, following the devastating diagnosis of their unborn son with a severe congenital heart defect during a routine 20-week pregnancy scan. In the UK, a baby is born with a serious heart condition every two hours, yet only about half of these defects are detected prenatally through standard scanning procedures.
A Life-Changing Moment
For expectant parents Ruth and Steve, what was anticipated as a normal appointment turned into a moment that altered their lives forever. "At our 20-week scan we heard the words no parent ever wants to hear: There's a problem with your baby's heart," Ruth recounted. The couple was promptly referred to Leicester Royal Infirmary, where medical professionals confirmed that their baby boy has severe congenital heart disease, necessitating life-saving open heart surgery immediately after birth.
Ruth described the diagnosis as "heart-breaking" but emphasized that the support from Tiny Tickers has been instrumental in helping them maintain hope and prepare for the challenges ahead. "We are so grateful that our baby's condition was picked up at our scan," she said. "It means he can get the best care straightaway."
The Vital Role of Tiny Tickers
Tiny Tickers is a national charity dedicated to enhancing the early detection of congenital heart disease (CHD). Their initiatives include providing specialist training for sonographers who conduct pregnancy scans, equipping them with the confidence and skills to identify heart defects before birth. Additionally, the charity installs life-saving equipment in maternity units across the UK and offers comprehensive practical and emotional support to families post-diagnosis.
Running for a Cause
In a bid to give back and raise awareness, Steve will participate in the City of Lincoln 10K on April 12, joined by a large group of family and friends. "We want to raise awareness and funds so Tiny Tickers can continue giving other families the same lifeline they've given us," Steve explained. The running team has set an ambitious goal of raising £1,000 per kilometre, targeting a total of £10,000. They are already making significant progress, having collected over £7,000 in donations.
Team Members
The couple expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone supporting the 10K effort, including: Fiona Webster, Richard Webster, Nicky Webster, Joey Walukiewicz, Joe Tobin, John Lavelle, Jonny McClements, Pete Sanderson, Dan McCardell, Grant Hudson, Alex Matthews, Sam Pooley, Robert Cook, Subhani Cook, Pete Cook, Cameron Heap, Oliver Blanchard, Tia Sharp, Rory McCracken, Daniel Swain, Millie Clark, Lucy Gourlay, Claire Martin, and Susan Tobin.
A Call to Action
Ruth highlighted the broader impact of their fundraising: "With your help, Tiny Tickers can be a safety net for the 1,000 babies each year who leave hospital with their heart defect undetected - improving survival and giving babies the best possible start." This campaign underscores the critical need for improved prenatal screening and support systems for families facing similar challenges.
