Llandudno Couple, 81 and 90, Fundraise for Happy Faces

Couple's Fundraising Legacy Continues at New Home

Sylvia Harper, 81, and her husband John, 90, have dedicated more than a quarter of a century to transforming the lives of vulnerable children across North Wales through their fundraising for Happy Faces Children's Charity. Now living at Tan y Fron independent living scheme in Llandudno, the couple have set up a regular craft stall to continue their legacy.

"We've been fundraising for Happy Faces for over 25 years," said Sylvia. "We've always worked hard, and love doing activities for charity."

Handmade Items Support Sick and Disabled Children

Sylvia crochets hundreds of items including bags, purses, mittens, accessories, greetings cards, home accessories, and candle holders. The proceeds from these sales go to Happy Faces Children's Charity, which supports sick and underprivileged children, as well as those with disabilities, across North Wales.

Over the years, the funds raised have helped provide minibuses, computers, books, wheelchairs, and other essential items for young recipients.

From Clown Dolls to Craft Fairs

Reflecting on her journey, Sylvia said: "We were asked to help with a charity show many years ago and have never looked back. I started by knitting clown dolls, and over time expanded into lots of different crafts. We have sold items at craft fairs, community events, car boot sales - all over the place! We are always looking for new ways to support the charity."

John, a musician, and Sylvia, a former dancer who also writes children's books, have used their creative backgrounds to fuel their fundraising success. Sylvia has published several books, including a series about living with disability.

Tan y Fron Community Embraces Fundraising

When the couple moved into Tan y Fron in July 2025, they established their fundraising ethos in the community. Encouraged by other residents and scheme manager Debjani Basu, they organized their first craft stall, which was such a success that it became a regular feature with seasonal stalls and other fundraising events planned throughout the year.

Debjani Basu said: "Sylvia and John's dedication to fundraising is exceptional. Over many years they have demonstrated compassion and generosity and made a positive difference to so many! We're delighted that Tan y Fron is a place where our residents can build on their passions, and it's wonderful to see the residents supporting each other whilst raising money for worthwhile causes. We're enormously proud of Sylvia and John."

No Plans to Slow Down

The couple have no plans to stop. Sylvia said: "We're always coming up with new ideas, and even though myself and Ray are 81, and John is 90, we keep going and never stop! As far as we're concerned, it's a case of - watch this space!"
