Record £84k Raised as Pilgrims Hospices Recycle 4,600 Christmas Trees
Pilgrims Hospices' Christmas Tree Recycling Breaks Records

A pioneering annual campaign that transforms discarded festive firs into crucial funds for specialist care has celebrated its most successful year to date. Pilgrims Hospices' Christmas Tree Recycling service has smashed records, collecting more than 4,600 trees and raising a phenomenal £84,000 to support end-of-life care across East Kent.

A Community Effort in Action

Over one exceptionally busy weekend in January, an army of more than 125 dedicated volunteers fanned out across Canterbury, Thanet, and Ashford. They worked tirelessly to collect trees directly from residents' doorsteps, a service made possible by the generous support of local businesses who donated vans, equipment, and time free of charge. Staff from Pilgrims Hospices also coordinated operations to ensure the smooth running of the collections.

At Pilgrims Hospice Canterbury, the vital chipping services were once again provided by D. Parr Tree Surgeons, a father-and-son team with a personal connection to the hospice's work. Sue Sharp, Director of Marketing and Income Generation at Pilgrims Hospices, highlighted the campaign's core spirit: "This initiative embodies community spirit—turning festive trees into vital care for families in East Kent. Every single tree collected helps fund our essential hospice services. We simply couldn't do it without our incredible volunteers, supporters, and local businesses uniting in such a powerful way."

Environmental Care and Lasting Impact

In keeping with its ethical mission, every collected tree was processed responsibly. Routes were meticulously planned for fuel efficiency before the trees were chipped. The resulting mulch is being reused for landscaping, composting, and even in the hospices' own gardens, completing a full circle of sustainability.

This year's astounding result brings the campaign's 14-year total to an incredible more than 25,000 trees collected and over £450,000 raised since it began in Ashford. The funds are a lifeline, helping Pilgrims Hospices provide free, specialist care to thousands of local patients and their families during their most challenging times.

A Legacy of Local Support

The campaign serves as a powerful testament to how small, collective actions within a community can create a life-changing difference. From the residents who booked a collection and gave a donation, to the volunteers who braved the January weather, and the businesses that lent their resources—each contribution, one tree at a time, adds up to provide comfort, dignity, and essential care across East Kent.

The service covered locations including Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Broadstairs, Ramsgate, and Westgate-on-Sea, demonstrating the widespread community support for the hospices' vital work.
