Spinathon Raises £3,200 for Breast Cancer Charity in Oadby

Parklands Leisure Centre Spinathon Generates £3,200 for Breast Cancer Now

Parklands Leisure Centre, operated by award-winning company Everyone Active in partnership with Oadby and Wigston Borough Council, hosted a successful fundraising event that raised more than £3,000 for Breast Cancer Now. The event, known as Fundraising Friday, brought in a total of £3,200 through a combination of a 12-hour spinathon and special activity classes, showcasing the community's strong support for the cause.

Gruelling 12-Hour Spinathon and Fitness Classes

Organised by the centre's group exercise manager, Sarah Merriman, the event featured a '10-strong' cycle squad who pedalled on indoor cycles non-stop from 6am to 6pm. This dedicated effort was in support of Everyone Active's partner charity, Breast Cancer Now. During the final 45 minutes of the spinathon, the squad was joined in the reception area by participants from the regular Friday night spin class, also taught by Sarah, adding to the energetic atmosphere.

In addition to the spinathon, instructors Linda Tyers and Tanya Sweeney led two retro-pink themed activity classes. These included a Step session and a Les Mills BodyPump™ Euromix class, which together attracted 84 participants. The themed classes added a fun and engaging element to the fundraising efforts, encouraging more people to get involved and donate.

Community and Business Support

The event benefited from significant community generosity, with customers and members contributing donations throughout the day. Sarah Merriman expressed her gratitude, stating, "Every one of us on the bikes in the '10-strong' group has been touched by this disease in some way and we wanted to give something back. The camaraderie was incredible!" She added, "A big thank you to all the members and customers who came and supported us with donations. It was overwhelming; they are so incredibly generous." She also thanked Linda and Tanya for their enthusiasm in organising and leading the classes.

Local businesses played a key role in supporting the event. Arun Sarna Hot Tub Suppliers provided three ice baths to help participants recover after the intense activities, while Nicola Allen Acupuncture Leicester offered additional support. This collaboration highlighted the strong local network backing charitable initiatives in the area.

Impact and Future Prospects

The £3,200 raised will go directly to Breast Cancer Now, supporting their research and care programmes. This event not only raised vital funds but also raised awareness about breast cancer, bringing the community together for a common cause. The success of Fundraising Friday at Parklands Leisure Centre demonstrates the power of collective effort in making a difference, with potential for similar events in the future to continue supporting important health charities.
