Birmingham Chinese takeaway gets zero hygiene rating due to language barrier
Birmingham takeaway zero hygiene rating over language barrier

A Chinese takeaway in Birmingham has received a zero-hygiene rating after inspectors encountered a significant language barrier during their visit.

Sea Garden, located in Perry Barr, was given the lowest possible score by hygiene inspectors on March 25. Any rating below three is considered a failure on the Food Standards Agency website.

Inspectors assess factors such as cleanliness, food preparation, and storage during their visits. In response to the rating, Sea Garden explained that the inspection took place before the takeaway opened to the public, and no English-speaking staff were present at the time.

The takeaway stated that this led to 'considerable misunderstandings' and that the rating does not accurately reflect the quality of their service. The premises said they have taken immediate action and would appreciate a revisit inspection.

On the Food Standards Agency website, Sea Garden responded: 'We acknowledge the findings of the inspection and appreciate the guidance provided by the food safety officer. Since the inspection, we have taken immediate and comprehensive action to address the issues identified.'

'The premises has undergone a thorough deep clean, and additional cleaning schedules and monitoring procedures have been implemented to ensure high standards of hygiene are maintained at all times.'

'Staff members have received further training and guidance on food safety, cleaning procedures, and correct food handling practices. We have also reviewed and strengthened our food safety management system to ensure that all procedures are clearly documented and consistently followed.'

'Regular checks are now carried out by management to ensure compliance with food hygiene regulations. Our team is fully committed to maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for our customers, and we will continue to monitor and improve our standards to ensure full compliance with food safety requirements.'

'As the time was 4.30pm and we open at 5pm, we had not yet officially opened. So many aspects were still in preparation. Furthermore, our English-speaking staff had not yet arrived, and the significant language barrier led to considerable misunderstandings.'

'As a result, the rating does not accurately reflect the true quality of our service and overall experience. Since the inspection, management has reviewed all procedures and implemented improvements to ensure full compliance with food hygiene regulations.'

'We would appreciate a revisit inspection at your convenience so that the improvements can be assessed.'
