A 19-year-old man has been injured in a serious knife attack in Birmingham city centre after being chased by two assailants along a major road.
Chase and Attack on Broad Street
The incident occurred on Tuesday, 30 December, at around 10:15pm. The victim was walking with a friend along Broad Street when they were pursued by two individuals towards Centenary Square.
During the confrontation, the teenager was slashed with a knife, sustaining a cut to his head. The attackers then fled the scene on foot. West Midlands Police confirmed the injury was not life-threatening.
Major Police Response and Disruption
Officers responded with a significant presence, including both marked and unmarked vehicles. A large cordon was established encompassing an area of Broad Street and Centenary Square.
The police action caused considerable transport disruption:
- Buses and trams were blocked within the cordon.
- West Midlands Metro suspended services between Grand Central and Edgbaston Village for several hours, with trams only running between Wolverhampton Station and Grand Central.
The scene remained sealed off into the night as forensic examinations took place.
Ongoing Investigation and Appeal
West Midlands Police have launched an investigation but have not yet made any arrests. A force spokesperson stated they are pursuing several lines of enquiry, with a key focus on reviewing CCTV footage from the area.
