West Midlands Police Seize Over 25 Cars Daily for Uninsured Driving

In a stark warning to motorists, West Midlands Police have revealed that they seize an average of more than 25 vehicles every single day because the drivers lack valid insurance. The blight of uninsured driving across the region led to a staggering 9,501 vehicles being taken off the streets throughout 2025.

Sharp Increase in Vehicle Seizures

The number of cars confiscated for this offense jumped by 1,028 last year compared to 2024, highlighting a growing problem. This equates to an average of over 26 vehicles being removed from circulation daily, underscoring the relentless enforcement efforts by police.

Data from the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) confirms that Birmingham contains four of the top 15 postcodes nationally for uninsured drivers. Notably, two of the top three worst areas are in Birmingham: B25, covering Yardley, and B18, which includes Winson Green, Hockley, and Soho.

Neighbouring Sandwell also features prominently, with its B66 postcode—encompassing Smethwick, Bearwood, and Warley—ranking fifth on the list.

Police Issue Stern Warning to Offenders

A police spokesperson emphasized the severe risks associated with driving without insurance. "Driving without insurance is dangerous, costly, and can have life-changing consequences," they stated. "We work closely with the MIB to target drivers who fail to ensure their vehicles."

The spokesperson further explained that uninsured drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in collisions and are often linked to wider criminal activities. "Recent operations have uncovered serious crimes, including violent offences, drug supply, and knife crime," they added.

Consequences and Enforcement Actions

In the UK, every driver must have at least third-party insurance before getting behind the wheel. Despite this legal requirement, thousands continue to take the risk, endangering themselves and others.

Those caught driving without insurance face:

  • A £300 fine
  • Six penalty points on their licence
  • In serious cases, an unlimited fine, a driving ban, and vehicle seizure and destruction

The police spokesperson highlighted the personal impact, noting: "Losing your car also means losing your freedom—no way to get to work, take the kids to school, or travel where you need to go."

High-Profile Seizures and Ongoing Operations

Earlier this month, a flash, uninsured Lamborghini was seized on Belgrave Middleway in Birmingham—coincidentally on a couple's wedding day. This incident, along with the seizure of vehicles like a maroon Hyundai and a Toyota Aygo in the city, illustrates the broad range of cars being confiscated.

Chief Inspector Keeley Bevington from the force’s Roads Policing Unit reinforced the message: "Driving without insurance is a serious risk to everyone on the road. If you choose to break the law, you’re not only endangering lives but also jeopardising your own future."

She assured the public that officers are working tirelessly to identify and prosecute offenders. "Our officers are working around the clock, every single day, to identify uninsured drivers and take action. We will find you, we will seize your vehicle, and we will prosecute. The message is simple: stay insured, drive responsibly, and help us keep our roads safe."
