Armed Police Deployed to Cannock Park Over Toy Gun Incident
Armed police were called to Cannock Park in Staffordshire following a concerning 999 report of a man seen with what appeared to be a handgun. The incident occurred on Saturday, February 14, prompting a swift response from officers to ensure public safety.
Details of the Police Response
Upon arrival at the park on Stafford Road, armed officers located the man and discovered the weapon was actually a BB gun. He was initially arrested but later de-arrested after the situation was clarified. Police provided him with advice regarding the dangers of carrying such items in public spaces.
During the same operation, officers also detained a 14-year-old boy who was found in the area with a Desert Eagle replica toy gun. The replica was seized, and the boy was spoken to in the presence of his parents as part of the police's handling of the matter.
Official Statements from Staffordshire Police
Chief Inspector Lee Walker from the Cannock local policing team emphasized the significant impact such calls have on police resources. "Our officers are trained to a high standard to deal with these incidents in an appropriate, lawful and proportionate manner," he stated.
He further explained, "Armed officers will deploy to any person who is believed to be carrying a firearm to ensure the safety of the public and communities of Staffordshire. While you will know that you’re not carrying a real gun, those around you don’t."
Public Safety Warning
A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police urged the public to reconsider carrying BB or toy guns in public areas. The force is actively reaching out to young people, parents, and schools to convey that such actions are likely to result in armed police responses, a scenario they aim to prevent.
Chief Inspector Walker added, "That includes police officers and concerned members of the public who will see you as a threat, especially if you’re in a park or an area where there are lots of people." This incident underscores the potential dangers and misunderstandings that can arise from carrying replica firearms in crowded settings.
